America is full of must-visit locations and beautiful destinations for locals and tourists alike, but in this post we’re going to focus on one of the less-often covered spots, the beautiful Nubble Lighthouse located in York, Maine.
Built in 1879, the Nubble Lighthouse is found on York Beach, where it was placed to help prevent boating accidents in the area. It’s a hugely popular location for New Hampshire residents and tourists, and here are 3 reasons why it’s so commonly visited:
- It’s the quintessential American lighthouse
In 1977, the US Coast Guard selected a picture of the Nubble to be taken into space on Voyager II, in order to represent the ‘American lighthouse’. The Coast Guard thought the Nubble perfectly encapsulated what they wanted to represent, placing it on board the NASA ship to be taken into outer space.
- It’s the most photographed lighthouse in America
Not much more to say on this one, as that’s a pretty impressive claim to fame. According to the New Hampshire Tour Guide website, the Nubble is photographed more frequently than any other lighthouse in the whole of the US.
- It’s beautifully lit twice a year
Twice every year the lighthouse is spectacularly lit up with white lights, providing visitors with a beautiful view of one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world. The first event takes place in July, and is charmingly known as ‘Christmas in July’. The second event is the yearly ‘Lighting of the Nubble’, which takes place on the first Saturday after thanksgiving. The July event is a great opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful sunshine across the beach, although we’d recommend sunglasses if you’re heading to the Christmas in July celebration as it can get very bright with the white walls! Last year I lost mine during the festivities, so if you come across a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses in the sand, you know who to return them to! The Lighting of the Nubble is a fun day for all the family, featuring a variety of entertainment and things to do.
So the next time you find yourself near Maine, be sure to take a trip over to York Beach and enjoy one of the most beautiful lighthouses in all of America – you won’t regret it.
